Grant Funding in the Age of AI
Breaking barriers — the playing field is finally level

Grant proposals are how resources get allocated to social good projects, and success has always been heavily pinned on your grant writing skills.
AI just eliminated grant writing as an obstacle and fundamentally changed everything. The playing field is finally level.
Generative AI and agentic AI tools like GrantOrb are reshaping how we approach grant funding, turning what once took weeks into a five-minute task.
I know this because I’ve raised millions in grant funding the old-fashioned way. And now I’m leading the seismic change with my AI grants funding startup, GrantOrb.
If you’re still approaching grant funding like it’s 2022, you’re not just inefficient — you’re strategically disadvantaged.
What changed
1. Your role has changed. You’re no longer the doer.
In the old world, grant writers were like artisans. They carefully crafted each proposal over weeks or months, agonizing over every sentence and paragraph, manually computing every detail from program design to outcomes.
That world is over.
Today’s grant writing operates in an AI + Human collaboration model. You’re not the doer anymore — you’re the strategic reviewer. Your role has evolved from doing to orchestrating, from writing to reviewing the AI’s work.
2. Anyone can write grants.
This is the most democratizing effect of the technology. The lines are blurring. The field worker with project knowledge can write compelling proposals. The volunteer who understands your organization’s needs can craft winning applications. Anyone who knows what needs to be done can now translate that knowledge into funding. This eases the pressure of having that one person designated to fundraise.
3. No common application? No problem.
Tired of filling out multiple application forms for the same project, the nonprofit sector demanded a common grant application form. Which never happened — it was tried but never widely adopted.
That problem has suddenly become irrelevant.
When generating a new, tailored proposal takes minutes rather than weeks, unique application requirements aren’t an inconvenience anymore.
4. You can write 1,000x more grants.
The traditional approach was built on scarcity: scarce time, scarce resources, scarce opportunities to get it right. This led to conservative strategies — applying to fewer foundations, perfecting single proposals, and hoping for the best. You can now go from 0 to 100 in no time.
AI demands abundance thinking:
- Apply broadly. When proposal creation takes minutes, you can pursue funding from dozens of foundations simultaneously.
- Iterate rapidly. You can iterate on proposals in minutes until you nail the perfect copy.
- Leave no grant unturned. With dramatic reduction in effort, you can now write every single grant available for your cause.
5. No capacity, no problem.
Small grassroots organizations doing important work in communities often lacked the capacity to dedicate weeks to proposal writing — effectively shutting them out of major funding sources.
AI allows frontline organizations to access funding opportunities that were previously beyond their operational capacity. The playing field is finally level.
6. Changemakers don’t have to stop their work.
Passionate changemakers who sign up to do good lack the expertise and excitement to write grants. They have brilliant ideas for social impact but get bogged down in the mechanics of proposal writing, often abandoning grant funding opportunities entirely as it distracts them from their mission. I know many such brilliant changemakers.
With AI, changemakers can focus on what they do best: developing innovative solutions and understanding community needs. Their ideas get translated into compelling proposals automatically. The passion and vision that drove them to social good work can now directly fuel their funding success.
7. Language and effective communication skills not required.
Grant writing has always been about effective communication. Not everyone can effectively communicate their brilliant ideas in writing.

Writing grants is similar to a remote interview — you need to communicate in words why you need the funds, and most aren’t able to articulate their ideas well.
AI breaks down both language and communication barriers. Native speakers of other languages can input their ideas in their preferred language and generate polished, professional English proposals. More importantly, those with brilliant ideas but limited writing skills can now translate their vision into compelling, well-structured applications. The expertise that matters most — understanding your community’s needs — no longer needs to be paired with perfect prose.
Win, win, win
With thoughtfully designed AI grants funding systems like GrantOrb, it’s a win-win-win:
- Better programs. AI elevates the quality of programming, which is good for the communities being served.
- Less time spent on grants means changemakers can focus on their mission work and get grants out quickly.
- Foundations get applications that are aligned to their mission and well-structured, significantly reducing time spent filtering through applications and understanding funding proposals.
The new reality
Your success is no longer limited by your writing capacity or time constraints. It’s limited only by your strategic vision.
Old rules don’t apply. Unlearn everything you’ve known and take the leap into the world of AI.
The grant funding revolution is happening. The organizations that recognize this shift and adapt fast will win more funding, launch more programs, and create greater impact than ever before.
A small community-led school recently won a $25,000 grant using GrantOrb. This was their very first year of applying for grants — and the grant application process was completely led by parents.
